What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?
Recognition of prior learning (RPL) involves the assessment of previously unrecognised skills and knowledge an individual has achieved outside the formal education and training system in respect of a specific unit. RPL is an assessment process that assesses the individual’s non-formal and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual has achieved these required learning outcomes or competency outcomes.
How can RPL benefit you?
RPL can provide you with the opportunity to gain a full or partial qualification without having to study subjects you already have skills in. This means you can save time and money by completing a qualification in a shorter period of time.

- RPL Pre-Assessment Interview
An assessor will contact you to arrange a pre-RPL interview to discuss your skills and experiences. Prior to the interview, you will be asked to complete a pre-assessment checklist.
The best way to assess your skills will be determined. This may involve observing you in the workplace or in a similar environment or contacting referees or employers to support your claims.
- Finalising the assessment
When all evidence is gathered, the assessor will advise you if your skills and experience have been officially recognised towards a full or part qualification. If you need to do additional training to complete a qualification, the assessor will advise you on what is required.
