AF008Community Support Skill Set
The AF008 Community Support Skill Set is only 2 weeks long and is a great way to take your first step into community services and health-related work. It can help you build practical skills, knowledge and confidence that may support a pathway into further study, including other community services, health and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health courses.
Completing the Skill Set can also help you understand how to support people, families and community members in a respectful and culturally safe way. By learning these skills, you are not only investing in your own future, but also helping to strengthen your community.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who choose to work in community support can make a valuable difference by providing culturally respectful support, building trust and helping people connect with the services they need. It is an opportunity to learn, grow, give back and make a positive difference for your community.
This skill set is designed to provide both new and existing community services and care/support workers with the knowledge and skills to provide care and wellbeing support to individuals in a community setting.
- HLTWHS002 Follow safe work practices for direct client care
- HLTAID011 Provide first aid
- CHCCOM005 Communicate and work in health or community services

To be eligible for enrolment you are required to
- Be 18 years of age and provide Photo ID with proof of age.
- Be of Aboriginal or/Torres Strait Islander Descent
- Be residing in Western Australia

The AF008 Community Support Skill Set can be a great starting point for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who are interested in building a career in health. Completing the Skill Set gives you an opportunity to develop practical skills, confidence and an understanding of working respectfully with people and communities.
These skills can provide a strong foundation for further study in health-related courses, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, nursing, community services, mental health, aged care, disability support and other health qualifications. It can also help you become familiar with learning and assessment before moving into a larger qualification.
Most importantly, studying health can provide an opportunity to build your own career while contributing to the health and wellbeing of your family, community and mob. By gaining skills and qualifications, you can become part of a stronger Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workforce and help provide culturally safe and respectful care within your community.
